Is FUE Hair Transplant Painful?

The FUE hair transplant tends to restore hair by replacing the old follicles (having the least or no mitotic rate) with the new follicles (having a greater mitotic rate). It is done by taking individual hair follicles from the donor area and transplanting them into the recipient area.

Hair growth is a three-phase cycle:

  1. Anagen – The growth phase
  2. Catagen –  The regression phase
  3. Telogen – The resting phase

The cycle of hair growth is different for different people. This is because the mitotic rate varies amongst individuals on different grounds. The process of regrowth declines gradually with age until follicles no longer regrow hairs.

The micro punches are used to extract single follicles and are moved and leave behind almost no signs of extraction. After the FUE hair transplant, there are minimal to no side effects like tiny white scars on the donor area.

How Painful is an FUE Hair Transplant?

The FUE Hair Transplant is a four-step procedure wherein initially, the surgeon applies local anesthesia to ensure comfort. Later, hair follicles are extracted from the donor area. The extracted follicles are then transplanted into small incisions created in the recipient area. And finally, in the last stage, the precision of transplanted hair is determined.

It is noticeable that the procedure is delicate and labor-intensive. The entire procedure shouldn’t cause any pain, as surgeons use local anesthesia to numb the scalp. It may cause slight irritation initially, but when the scalp becomes numb, there won’t be any pain. Again, this may vary from person to person, but surgeons make sure that there is no pain.

How long does the pain last after an FUE hair transplant?

Every person heals at a different rate. While some people may feel minimal discomfort for a few days after an FUE hair transplant, others may feel a sensitive scalp for a week or two. The pain may also differ depending on the number of grafts an individual got transplanted. It implies that if an individual had more grafts transplanted, he/she may experience more pain; and may take a little longer to heal.

On average, it takes around 4 to 8 days to heal. However, if an individual experiences more pain even after 2 weeks post-surgery and feels that the scalp isn’t healing at the rate it should; it is advisable to get in touch with the surgeon.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery after FUE Hair Transplant

  1. It is suggested to sleep with the head elevated at 45 degrees, with two or three pillows.
  2. Individuals have to keep in check the prescribed medications by surgeons.
  3. Avoid swimming or any strenuous physical activity during the healing period.
  4. Avoid intake of concentrated garlic, smoking, alcohol, or any other food that happens to thin the blood.
  5. Cover & protect the head from direct sunlight.
  6. Use mild or recommended hair shampoo for a few weeks after starting the head wash.
  7. Avoid combing or brushing hair for a minimum of 3 weeks.
  8. Avoid weight lifting for a minimum of 2 weeks after FUE Hair Transplant.
  9. Do not use hair dryers or any styling products for the initial 2 weeks
